Friday evening and I had to attend three different functions, so the mob had a singalong down at Allendale. I'm absolutely positive that they ring around to find out what night I'm going out, and then use that night! It's frightful really

Chelsea's New Hat

Chelsea came in this morning obviously very excited. She had discovered a traditional Island hat in Aatuti Art made by Miralda Warren of Pitcairn Island. Miralda has visited Norfolk many times and has a number of friends here. Chelsea's hat is made from a very old plaiting pattern and is decorated with roses made from the skeleton of leaves. It is beautiful and Chelsea has every reason to be excited. Her father has a hat in the same pattern made for him many years ago by Island Elder, Mrs Mary Joe Nobbs.

Australians all let us rejoice.......

Australia Day 2012 and although the weather looked very iffy, it was perfect at Government House. All were outside on the lawns and due to an overcast sky it was neither too hot nor too cold.

Many years ago Bill Sanders gave me a cutting of a white helaconia that he had imported from Hawaii. This was in the days before ASIC, Customs, Quarantine and all the other romdiddlytom that we have today.

Anyway, Willam's white flower finally bloomed, beautiful and......RED!
Yesterday was the perfect day to cut it back, and I thought it looked so lovely, I've uploaded a photo.

Norfolk Island's World Heritage Area

What mainlanders are now discovering is that Norfolk Island has a fantastic piece of real estate in Kingston, with history spanning three cultures. We, of course, have known this since 1856! They're a little slow.

When Miki went back to BrisVegas she made us promise that we would continue to have picnics and barbeques throughout the summer. We tried Miki, we tried, but it's just not the same without you

Wearable Art 2012

Saturday night saw the annual Wearable Art Competition, held by The Community Arts Society, usually to raise funds for its members to travel to the Pacific Arts Festival, which this July will be held in the Solomon's Island

The overall winner of the evening was Wayne Boniface with his magnificent creation, modelled by Mandy Gardiner

The outfit was so spectacular that I'm uploading four photos to try and show the amount of work that went into this creation

I think that most people in the hall were absolutely blown away by Wayne's creation

And totally blown away by the magnificence of Mandy on stage. An absolutely stunning exhibit Wayne

Donna Woods modelled her own creation inspired by many many scarves

The evening was compered by Teddy and Rose Evans and what a fantastic job they did ~ professional, entertaining and witty

Emilee Nicolai ~ recently returned from a year in France ~ modelled for George Douran. The inspiration came from the blue agapantha lillies which were then painted black and white

I thought this creation utterley fantastic

Paige Adams modelled a dress created by herself and three young friends, using old CD's. Very shiny and shimmery

Mrs Monica Forsyth (see earlier post of wedding) modelled a creation by Alison Ryves, but Monica's performance was absolutely amazing. She took the show to international level. Wow. Brilliant

Mikiela Reynolds and Ashley Pereira danced to the music and choreography of Mikiela. More beautiful young ladies were on stage, but the camera unfortunately, didn't pick them up

Robin Butterfield created this lovely child's dress which was then modelled by her beautiful grand-daughter

Adrienne Zamour Bongout modelled a waistcoat made from pieces of pine bark and needles

Belinda Elliott modelled an earlier gown of Wayne Boniface's. These gowns will be taken to the Pacific Arts Festival for exhibition

Sarina Tricky and her daughter were two of the models used by Alison Ryves to showcase her series of sarongs designed to reflect the nature of Norfolk Island

Brad Griffith brought the house down with his modelling of Lou Taverner's Feral Rooster, made from dried palm leaves, spray painted. What a crow!

Jeanie Forsyth modelled a dress created by her grand-mother Marie, out of old used wine pillows found inside the cardboard casks.

Lexi Tavener is a young designer who models her own creations. This one took yards and yards of folded paper. Lexi is a veteran of the Wearable Art Competition and is growing stronger and stronger each year

The beautiful grand daughter of Mrs Robyn Butterfield, Miss Amelia Murray ~ supported by all the members of her family ~ looked delightful as she swayed her way down the catwalk

Moses modelled a frock made by Kaye at Hot Crust Bakery. When asked later how long the flowers took to make, Kaye replied "About five months!"

Shari modelling her own dress, created from old discarded bags, purses and handbags. Her creations are always original and always aesthetic. I adore her work

Yvon French Adams modelled for George Douran, another designer to take note of. This creation was made from the fibrous roots of hydroponically grown tomatoes. Teddy of course had a wonderful ad lib to go with it

Caroline and her partner designed a Wunna for the Pacific Theme and marched down the catwalk to catcalls and cheers from the audience

Another creation by Kaye, this time using the ends of the plastic bags that hold the bread baked at Hot Crust. The tiny "pearls" on the bodice are the leftover dough after putting the dough into bread pans. Certainly recycled. Talisa's dress uses the same material, but this time, Kaye used the blue plastic!

Following the judging the remaining crowd were entertained by the Norfolk Island band, 40 grit. Can't wait for next year!
