Bounty Day is Norfolk Island's National Day. It is celebrated on the
8th June every year to commemorate the landing of the Pitcairn Islanders
in Norfolk Island ~ their new home. Each year the descendents of the
Mutineers ~ Fletcher Christian, William McCoy, Mathew Quintal, John Adams, Ned Young and their Tahitian partners, Mauatua, Tevarua, Puarai, Teio, Teehuteatuaonoa, Vahineatua, Faahotu, Terarua, Mataohu and Teatuahitea, as well as John Buffett, John Evans and George Hunn Nobbs, three men
who left whaling ships to join the small community in Pitcairn ~ gather
on the Kingston Pier and re-enact the landing from the Morayshire. This
year, due to very rough seas, there was no re-enactment in the long
boat but the march continued as usual to the Cenotaph, on to the
Cemetery, then to Government House for tea and biscuits, and the judging
of the winning family. This year the Christians had the glory. Then
it's all for one and one for all as we gather in the old convict walls
by the sea shore for a community picnic.
Usually I would write under each photo, but as I have a number of other posts for this weekend, so I'll just leave you to enjoy.
I think this photo shows fairly clearly why there was no re-enactment of the landing!
Thanks Saz Jenkins for letting me upload some of her photos as well.
After the march we as a family drove to Flagstaff to partake of a few measly morsels. Nothing spectacular you understand. Just a few minor tidbits to maintain our equilibrium!
So. A few little snaps to show you yet again what we do so well. Eat my friends. Eat!
